Breaking: Election turns bloody as Gunmen open fire at polling unit in Delta, many confirmed dead

 

The governorship and house of assembly elections in Delta State, was horrible when unidentified gunmen stormed some polling units and shot persons suspected to be members of a rival political party.

 

The incidents occurred during the collation of results in some polling units in Ughelli South local government area of the state.

One person was reportedly shot dead while scores of others sustained gunshot wounds amidst several others who received various degrees of matchete wounds.

Though the identity of the dead could not be ascertained as at press time, the victim was shot dead at Iwhrekan community while others whom were equally attacked, were ambushed at Oviri-Olomu and Ovwookpokpo communities.

Confirming the incident, a source at the Ughelli Central hospital, said a gunshot victim was rushed to the hospital alongside several others who received cuts on their bodies.

Speaking on the incident, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in the area, said all those attacked are members of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

 

Meanwhile, the PDP Delta Central campaign chairman, Chief Fred Majemite, has described the elections as peaceful amidst massive turnout of voters.

Speaking at Ekuigbo town hall were he voted, Majemite said: “What happened in the last election would not happen again, so this time around the people are ensuring that their votes count.”

On his part the Ughelli North II APC candidate, Chief Jaro Egbo, lamented the poor turnout of voters and expressed confidence in emerging victorious at the polls.

He said: “The voting response is very low, where you have about 1000 registered voters, and you have votes less than 200 or 300, you will see that they are not up to 30 percent but am hopefully I am going to be the next lawmaker representing the constituency.”
