FULL TIME: ARGENTINA HAVE QUALIFIED FOR THE KNOCK-OUTS!
What a victory. They’ve clawed a win! Magnificent for Argentina, devastating for Nigeria.
Argentina centre-back Marcos Rojo popped up in the unlikeliest of positions to volley home an 86th-minute winner against Nigeria and send his side into the last 16 of the 2018 World Cup.
Lionel Messi had rifled Argentina into a first half lead when he took Ever Banega’s pass into his path and finished coolly, but Nigeria levelled when Javier Mascherano was penalised for grappling in the box. Victor Moses equalised from the penalty spot.
With the game level at 1-1 with five minutes of normal time remaining the African side were heading through as Group D’s second-placed side, but Manchester United defender Rojo had different ideas.
He waltzed into the penalty area to meet Gabriel Mercado’s cross and volley an unstoppable effort into the bottom corner.
