The Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) found parasitic worms in 27 brands of canned sardines in Indonesia. 16 imported brands, 11 domestic production.

The problem of canned sardines contained in worms was widespread. After pulling three brands of canned sardines – Farmerjack, IO, and HOKI – last week, the Food and Drug Administration (BPOM) announced Wednesday 27 brands of sardine cans that also contained worm parasites .

Since the discovery of worms in three brands beginning until March 28, in his press statement BPOM stated that they have conducted sampling and testing of 541 fish samples in containers of cans consisting of 66 brands.

Test results showed 27 brands (138 bets ) positively contained parasitic worms. A total of 16 brands are imported products, while 11 are domestic products.

The research process will also be continued to other brands that do not currently contain the parasite of the worm.

“So this will continue to grow, there are 66 brands and 27 firm brands (ascertained, ed.) Contain worms and we have banned can no longer import and produce in the country,” said Head of BPOM Penny K Lukito to Liputan6 .

In the meantime, BPOM will stop the import of 16 brands, also stop the production of 11 domestic brands.

Penny revealed that domestic canned sardine products also use imported fish raw materials. The reason, sardines are found only outside the waters of Indonesia.

“Mackerel fish are not found in Indonesian waters and naturally contain parasitic worms,” said Penny, dinukil Merdeka.com .

“But surely it is our duty of the POM Board to ensure the products produced here, circulated, and consumed by the society meet the standards that are associated with hygienic ( hygienic ), safety, quality and benefits.”

Therefore BPOM also asked the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) to inform these findings to the suppliers of raw materials of mackerel fish abroad to stop their imports.

Anisakis simplex

Worms that contaminate the canned sardines are Anisakis simplex , parasitic worms common in marine fish such as salmon, herring, cod, mackerel, squid, red snapper, and halibut.

Worms work by entering the host’s intestines, then reproduce and remove the eggs into the sea through the host’s stool. They contain chemicals like proteins that are not human friendly. As a result, the immune system (immune) will regard it as a dangerous attack of a foreign substance.

The human infection can cause a disease called Anisakiasis. This disease causes inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, with common symptoms such as nausea and vomiting.

Anisakiasis usually affects the fans of sushi, Japanese snacks made from raw fish, or other seafood that is not cooked until cooked.

The dead anisakis worm, according to Purwiyatno Hariyadi, Professor of Food Technology from the Bogor Agricultural Institute, told CNN Indonesia , harmless to the body. However, the presence of the worm in cans shows that the manufacturer does not handle raw materials with hygiene.

However, the results of a study published in the journal Clinical Microbiology Reviews explains that exposure to allergens by anisakis worms die by air, food, or skin can also be harmful to the human body.

The following brands and types of sardines in canned packaging which according to BPOM research contains anisakis worms:
